Valve’s Steam Deck, a direct competitor to the Nintendo Switch, will start shipping in December, though the exact date is currently unknown.
The cheapest of the three Steam Deck versions starts at $399 and comes with only 64 GB of storage.Other versions of the Steam platform include other storage types with higher speeds and higher capacities. The 256 GB NVME SSD is priced at $529 and the 512 GB NVME SSD is priced at $649 each.
The accessories you receive in the package include a carrying case for all three options, and an anti-glare etched glass LCD screen exclusive to the 512 GB model.
However, it might be a bit misleading to call Steam Deck a direct competitor to the Nintendo Switch.Steam Deck is currently looking more at handheld minicomputers than dedicated gaming rigs.
It has the ability to run multiple operating systems (OS) and runs Valve’s own SteamOS by default. But you can also install Windows, or even Linux on it, and choose which ones to start.
It’s unclear which games will run on the Steam platform at launch, but some notable titles include Stardew Valley, Factorio, RimWorld, Left 4 Dead 2, Valheim, and Hollow Knight, to name a few.
SteamOS can still run non-Steam games. If you want to play anything from the Epic Store, GOG, or any other game that has its own launcher, you should be perfectly capable of doing so.
As for the specs of the device, the screen is slightly better than the Nintendo Switch: the Steam Deck has a 7-inch LCD screen, while the Nintendo Switch only has a 6.2-inch.The resolution is almost the same as the Nintendo Switch, both around 1280 x 800.
They also both support microSD cards for further storage expansion. If you like the weight of the Nintendo Switch, you’ll be disappointed to hear that the Steam Deck is almost twice as heavy, but beta testers for the product spoke of the positive aspects of the Steam Deck’s grip and feel.
A docking station will be available in the future, but its cost has not been announced. It will provide DisplayPort, HDMI output, Ethernet adapter and three USB inputs.
The internal specs of the Steam Deck system are impressive. It features a quad-core AMD Zen 2 Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) with integrated graphics.
The APU is designed to be a middle ground between a regular processor and a high-performance graphics card.
It’s still not as strong as a regular PC with a discrete graphics card, but it’s still pretty competent on its own.
The dev kit running Shadow of the Tomb Raider on high settings hit 40 frames per second (FPS) in Doom, 60 FPS on medium settings, and Cyberpunk 2077 on high settings 30 FPS.While we shouldn’t expect these stats to be on the finished product as well, we do know that Steam Deck works at least on these frames.
According to a Valve spokesperson, Steam has made it very clear that users “have every right to open it [Steam Deck] and do what you want”.
This is a very different approach compared to companies like Apple, which void your device warranty if your device is opened by a non-Apple technician.
Valve has produced a guide showing how to open the Steam platform and how to replace components. They even said that replacement joy-cons will be available on day one, as this is a major issue with the Nintendo Switch.Although they do not recommend clients to do so without proper knowledge.
